The ultimate Gee Bee and perhaps the most famous of American air racers, the R1 won the 1932 Thompson Trophy race and set a world landplane speed record of 296 mph.  Piloted by famed early aviator Jimmy Doolittle who went on to lead the Doolittle Raider attack on Tokyo and command the U.S. 8th Air Force in World War 2.  Powered by 800 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp and built at Springfield (MA) Airport.

Gee Bee Model D, Sportster

Completed after the first Model E was delivered, the inline Menasco powered Model D introduced the fully faired landing gear of the later record breaking Gee Bee racers.  Fully aerobatic, this Gee Bee aircraft also won many races in its class.  Top speed 150 mph, 125 hp Menasco C4 Pirate engine.  Built at Springfield (MA) Airport.

Gee Bee Model Y, Senior Sportster

Winner, Aerol Trophy Race at 1931 National Air Races with Springfield, MA aviatrix Maude Tait at the controls.  A former schoolteacher, Ms Tait was the first woman to be granted a transport pilots license in New England.   The speedy Gee Bee Model Y outperformed military aircraft of the period with its big 450 hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp C engine.  Built at Springfield (MA) Airport.
